Choosing Your Dock Builder in the Muskokas

Your dock will play a large role in your everyday life in the Muskokas. That’s why it’s so important to have one that’s been crafted by experts. In your first discussion with us, we’ll have a chat about the intended function of your dock; from a mooring point to an entertainment space, docks are used differently by different people. Ultimately, that intended function will dictate the design of your dock. If you’re using it as an entertaining space we’re likely to recommend a wide, large dock that can fit multiple chairs, while families using it as a mooring station will be happy with a basic rectangular model. After we gain an understanding of what you’re looking for we’ll come take a look at your shoreline and overall property so we can determine what we’re working with. There are a variety of different decks that can fit every type of environment:

1. Permanent Docks: These docks were built to last. The steel foundation of the dock structure is drilled or vibrated into the waters’ floor, which provides stability year-round. They’re a great option in environments where the water level doesn’t vary too widely. It’s important to note that they may not be the best option if you’re dealing with aggressive ice flow during the year, as this can damage the structure. We’ll let you know if you’re situated in an area that can accommodate a permanent dock.

2. Pipe Dock: These docks stand on ‘legs’. They are typically built with an aluminium frame and feature removable decking. This structure works best in environments where the water level doesn’t vary too widely, the lake floor is relatively hard, and the depth of the water doesn’t exceed 8 feet. Although a wallet-friendly option, they do have the drawback of having to be removed every winter.

3. Floating Docks: These docks are usually built with foam-filled plastic billets and commercial steel tube floats. Instead of having a foundation that stretches into the water floor, the decking rests on materials that float. Due to this configuration, floating docks are suitable in environments with muddy lake floors and variable water levels. Assuming you’re in an area that’s protected from aggressive waterflow, it’s also able to stay in the water year-round. 

4. Lift-Up Docks: Otherwise known as ‘tower docks’, these docks are typically built with aluminium and/or steel frames and legs. They’re suitable in environments where the water floor is relatively stable, the depth of the water doesn’t exceed 15 feet, and ice tends to pile up by the shore. During the winter months a winch ‘raises’ the dock into a position diagonal with the water’s surface.
